Signs Your Refrigerator Is Going Out — And Which Ones Actually Matter

Most refrigerators don’t just stop working one day without warning. They give you signals — sometimes weeks out, sometimes months. The problem is the signals are easy to dismiss. A little noise here, a slightly warm shelf there. You close the door and forget about it.

Then one morning the milk is warm and you’ve got $300 worth of groceries going bad.

Here are the actual signs that a refrigerator is heading toward failure — and which ones are worth acting on immediately versus which ones you can monitor.

It’s running more than it used to

A refrigerator should cycle on and off throughout the day. The compressor runs, the fridge cools down, the compressor stops. That’s normal. When you start hearing it run almost constantly — barely pausing — something is making it work harder than it should.

In Spokane homes, the two most common causes of this are dirty condenser coils and a failing defrost system. Dirty coils can’t reject heat efficiently, so the compressor never reaches its target and keeps running. A defrost failure lets frost build up on the evaporator coil, blocking airflow, same result — compressor runs constantly trying to compensate.

Both of these are fixable and relatively inexpensive. What makes them worth paying attention to is what happens if you don’t: the compressor overworks, overheats, and fails early. A $140 defrost heater turns into a $600 compressor decision. Running constantly is the fridge’s way of telling you something upstream is wrong.

We had a call from a family in Airway Heights two summers ago — August, right during a heavy smoke week. Their fridge had been running constantly for about three days. They figured the heat was the reason. It was partly true — the ambient temperature in the kitchen was high. But when we got there, the condenser coils at the back hadn’t been cleaned in years and were packed with a combination of dust and fine particulate from the smoke. The unit was working twice as hard as it needed to. Coil cleaning, $85 service call, fridge back to normal that afternoon.

The back or sides are unusually hot

The coils and compressor at the back of your refrigerator will always feel warm — that’s how the cooling cycle works, heat has to go somewhere. But if the back feels genuinely hot to the touch, or the sides of the fridge are warm in a way they never used to be, that’s a sign the system is working too hard or heat isn’t being rejected properly.

On older units this can indicate the compressor is struggling. On newer ones it’s often coil buildup again. Worth having someone look at it before it gets worse.

You’re finding frost where it shouldn’t be

A little frost in the back of the freezer is normal. A thick sheet of ice coating the back panel, or frost appearing on items near the vents, or frost building up inside the fresh food section — that’s not normal. That’s a defrost system failure presenting itself.

The defrost cycle is supposed to melt frost off the evaporator coil every 8–12 hours automatically. When it stops working, frost accumulates until the coil is completely encased. You’ll eventually notice the freezer getting warmer, items in the fridge not staying as cold, and the compressor running constantly.

This is one of the most common failure sequences we see, and one of the most fixable. Don’t wait until the fridge stops cooling entirely.

The temperature is inconsistent — sometimes fine, sometimes not

If your fridge seems fine some days and then you notice the cheese is slightly warmer than it should be, or the leftovers on the middle shelf aren’t as cold as the ones on the bottom — that inconsistency is a sign. Usually a thermistor (temperature sensor) failing to read accurately, or a control board that’s starting to mis-cycle the compressor.

The pattern to watch: if it keeps happening and seems to be getting more frequent, that’s a component degrading, not a one-off. Thermistor replacement is cheap. A control board is more, but still far less than a new refrigerator.

There’s water pooling under or inside the fridge

Water on the floor under the fridge, or pooling at the bottom of the fresh food section — this is almost always a clogged defrost drain. When the defrost cycle melts frost off the evaporator coil, that water is supposed to drain down through a tube into a pan at the bottom of the unit where it evaporates. When the drain tube clogs — mineral deposits in Spokane’s hard water accelerate this — the water has nowhere to go and backs up.

This isn’t a sign the refrigerator is dying. It’s a maintenance issue that gets worse if ignored — the standing water can freeze and create secondary problems. But it’s a $95–$140 fix in almost every case.

The motor sounds different — grinding, clicking, buzzing

A refrigerator has two or three fan motors and a compressor, all of which make sound. You get used to the baseline hum of your fridge after living with it for years. When that sound changes — a new grinding, a repetitive clicking on startup, a buzzing that wasn’t there before — something mechanical has changed.

Grinding from inside the freezer is usually an evaporator fan motor whose bearings are going. Clicking from the back, especially if followed by the fridge not cooling, is often the compressor trying to start and failing — sometimes a $15 starter relay is the culprit, sometimes the compressor itself. Buzzing near the water line connection is usually an inlet valve about to fail.

Location of the sound tells you a lot. Back of the unit, underneath, or inside the freezer each point to different components.

The door seal has gaps or feels soft in spots

Run your hand slowly along the door gasket all the way around. It should feel firm and consistent. Soft spots, cracks, or places where it clearly isn’t sealing against the frame mean warm air is getting in every time the door is closed. Your compressor is working harder than it should be, every single day.

Old-school test: close a piece of paper in the door and try to pull it out. It should grip and resist. If it slides out easily, that section of the gasket isn’t sealing. A gasket replacement runs $80–$150 and meaningfully extends compressor life.

Food is spoiling faster than it should

Leftovers going bad after two days. Milk expiring before its date. Vegetables wilting faster in the crisper. This is the sign that sneaks up on people — the fridge looks fine, the light comes on, the display says 37°F — but the actual temperature inside is drifting higher than the sensor reports. A faulty thermistor is the usual reason. Put a simple fridge thermometer (they cost $8) on the middle shelf and check it against what the display says. If there’s a gap of more than 3–4 degrees, something is off.

The compressor is clicking repeatedly without starting

This is the most serious sign on this list. A clicking sound from the back of the refrigerator — especially if it repeats every few minutes and the fridge isn’t cooling — is the compressor trying to start and failing. The first thing to check is the starter relay, a small component that costs $10–$20 and is a common failure point. Shake it — if you hear something rattling inside, it’s failed. Replace it and sometimes that’s the end of the problem.

If a new relay doesn’t fix the clicking, the compressor itself is likely failing. That’s a different conversation.

Questions people ask when they notice these signs

My fridge is making a clicking noise but still cooling — should I worry? Depends on the click. A single click when the compressor starts is normal. Rapid repeated clicking — especially if followed by the fridge not cooling — is the compressor trying to start and failing. Check the starter relay first. It’s a $15 part and a 10-minute swap. If that doesn’t fix the clicking, call a tech.

How do I know if my fridge temperature is actually off? Buy a basic fridge thermometer — they’re $8 at most hardware stores. Put it on the middle shelf for two hours and compare it to what the display says. A gap of more than 3–4 degrees means the sensor or control system is off. The display lying to you is more common than most people realize.

Can I keep using a fridge that’s showing these signs? Most of these signs don’t mean the fridge is about to die today. Running constantly and mild temperature inconsistency are worth scheduling a service call for — they’re not emergencies. The exception is the compressor clicking without cooling — that one needs attention quickly because food safety becomes a real concern within hours.

When to call versus when to monitor

Call now: compressor clicking without starting, both freezer and fridge warming up, water flooding inside the unit, grinding noise from the freezer that’s getting louder.

Monitor but schedule soon: running more frequently than usual, inconsistent temperatures, frost in unusual places, warm spots on the exterior.

Fix when convenient: gasket with soft spots, water pooling under the unit, food spoiling slightly faster — these are real issues but not emergencies.

Most of these signs point to a single failing component, not a refrigerator that’s done. The difference between catching it early and letting it go is usually the difference between a $150 repair and a $600 one — or a refrigerator that lasts another 10 years versus one that dies in 6 months.
